But importing’s no bargain

ARGENTINA makes

marvellous wine.

buy a bottle of per-
fectly acceptable red or
white table wine for 45
cents in the grocery
store.

I'm not a wine drinker. If I
consume half a_ giassful,
Brian usually has to finish up
the rest - he loves the stuff.

As an experiment, I
brought home two bottles of
red wine from Argentina.
One, picked up for 45 cents
and the other was purchased
in a. specialty shop - for
around four dollars. We
Stored the two bottles until
our next dinner party and
served both to guests who

bottles excellent but ALL
favored my modest little 45
cent offering. Disbelief was
written all over their faces
when I unveiled the Price

“protect” our wine and
liquor industries. I will not
get into a discussion about
the advisability of protecting
any manufacturer who has
gifted us with “Baby Duck”
and “Fuddie Duck” or
bubbles as big as marbles. It
has been my experience that
our government makes a
nice slice of cash while
“protecting” us.

Declare it at the border, pay
a little duty and truck it on
home. Sorry. Our govern-
ment is still on duty, pardon
the pun.

I talked with = several
people in the Liquor
Distribution Branch of the
B.C. government and here is

the product and get a proper
receipt, describing the total
cost, the complete
description of the wine and
proof of payment. This
eliminates the need for a
cash deposit placed with the
L.D.B. here before they will
allow the goods to be
shipped.

All is well until my return
home. At this time, receipt
firmly in hand, I must hustle
on over to the office at 3200
East Broadway in’ Van-
couver. If my receipt meets
with their approval, they will
notify the supplier to ship
the juice to them.

There is still a small
matter of duty, taxes and
markup. More about that in

Now comes the costing
out of my cases of wine. On

of methods of transport and

that adds approximately 33
cents to my bottle.

So far the total cost -
basic, freight and duty has
brought the price up to
$1.28. Next, the Federal
Sales Tax of 12 percent is
added, calculated on all
costs so far.

How they can charge sales. 7

boggles my mind but add 16 wt

cents. We're up to $1.44.

If the buck could stop
right there, ['d have a real
wine bargain BUT the B.C.
Government has decreed
that no bottle of imported
wine can be obtained here
for less than $2.75.

They have added a
markup of 110 per cent to
the previous figure, bringing
the price to $3.05. Had this
figure been under $2.75 it
would be adjusted to match.
Don’t forget Provincial Sales
Tax of 7 percent as a final
add-on.

From the time the wine
lands in Vancouver to the
time it gets poured for
dinner, the cost has more
than tripled. If the purchase
price was higher than 45
cents you can imagine the
cost of importing.
