New directions for women

Most women in the middle
years start to worry about
what is happening to them,
when after many busy years
with the family they seem to
have more time of their own.
Often this is accompanied by
a feeling of restlessness and a
sharply renewed sense of
wanting to do something
different to give meaning to
each day.

It is a familiar story, your
grown up teenagers don't
need you around so much,
your husband is preoccupied
with his work, or perhaps
you are now on your own.
Most of your friends and

neighbors seem to be busy
with new part time or full
tume jobs, and when you get
up each morning something
seems to be lacking.

In his book “The Three
boxes of Life,” Richard
Bolles says, “Our society
takes it for granted that
when you're young you will
study, when you're an adult
you will work, and when
you're old you will do
nothing. But, do you want it
to be that way? — Wouldn't
it be better to take stock now
and learn to balance educa-
tion, work and leisure, cach
day for the rest of your life.

It is sometimes called Life
planning, sometimes shifting
gears for the middle years,
but North Shore Family
Services recognizes this need
in women and is offering a
course called ‘New Direc-
tions’ for women (40 - 60
years) through the Adult and
Community Education
Services. It started on
Tuesday 19 January in the
Family Services office, 202,
145 East 15th St. North
Vancouver, for cight weeks.
