Sat. 2:00 (M) B7-Sunday News, November 9, 1960 MEN Food for thought ‘between ourselves’ Long way from the Coward tradition By NOEL WRIGHT Studio 58's production u: Alan Ayckbourn’s “Just Between Ourselves” — running at North Wan couvers Studio theatre in Presentauon House until November 15 — 1s descnbed as ‘unbearably funny comedy”. At certain points “unbearably” is the right adverb Not that this burlesque of husband/ wife/ mother-in-law relations im present-day suburban England is lacking 10 robust comedy ingredients. From beginning to end (well, almost to the ‘Devil’ is a fun play end) there are lots of laughs. But woven into the laughter there is also a growing element of pathos which builds up gradually to a dominating climax just before th: ; !osing curtain. As a result, ome finally leaves the theatre pon- dering, rather than chuckling, over this slice-of- life canmcature with its clear and thought- provoking message for more than a few real-hfe married couples. Presumably, that's precisely what Ayckbourn — one of England's top contemporary comedy writers — aims at. Cohn Mochrie and his mentally afflicted wife, played by Catherine Caines, deserve special mention, with competent support from Ebhzabeth Dancoes, Maggie Bellmaine and David Bloom. Anthony Holland's direction maintains its usual smooth standard. “Just Between Ourselves” is a long way from the Coward tradition. But it provides a very interesung evening of entertainment, with some solid food for thought to take home with you. Curtain time is 8:30 (Saturdays 6:30 and 9:30). Reservations 986-1351.
