I get too hungry to wait until eleven for “after theatre dinners” and besides, who can sicep on a gutfull of food? Our new friend, Richard Dehmarie, led us by the hand to some of the best food bargais in the theatre Gstrict, where we could have a delicious meal for a price that would make you weep. Try the lamb and Steamed potatoes — usually the Sunday night special. the zucchini is marvellous. Nice surroundings with checkered tablecloths. JIMMY RAYS (Eighth Avenuc and approx. 43rd St.) On our first visit, we had avocado filled with shrimp salad portions for — $2.95! | couldn't belicve the valuc and that salad was delicious with picnty of shnmp. celery and walnuts. On our second vist «they were out of avocado so I had Quiche Lorratwne and spmach saiad with creamy Roqucfort dressing That cost $4 They have a full menu written on slates Bar dnnks are reasonable If you're going to order somcthing stupid fike a hamburger. make sure you specify how you want the meat cooked as they often serve it cold in the middle. Service is_ fast, especially when you tell them you have theatre tickets. LA MANANA (1136 Ist. Avenue - between 62nd-63rd St.) Like Mexican food? A plate of taco chips and HOT salsa hits the table before you order. I had a “number seven” which was one taco, one enchilada and one chili releno — all great. Large servings and not so hot that you need a gallon of water. Hf you want more spice, add a bit of the salsa that comes with the taco chips. Our complete bill, for three with tip was under $30, including drinks! The restaurant 1s nicely decorated in brick with plants. KING CRAB Right next door to the Howard Johnson (across S2nd St.) this 1s the best seafood restaurant I'd visited in ages. At the bar, plates of squid done Itahan style with a berb-vincgar dressing are comphmentary. That, alonc, was cnough for dinner but we camed on. Mother had scallops (her favonte) and said they were the greatest. | had cod for $4 95 because | passport ph hile you wait North Shore Darkroom 1527 Lonsdale 988-9813 wasn't very hungry but to my surprise, I ate the whole thing. Garlic bread is chunky with butter and garlic and the salad was crisp with romaine and butter lettuce. Here agai, we spent less than $30 for three, with drinks. CURTAIN UP (43rd St. and Ninth Ave.) Clam bisque is a nice starter, either by the cup or bowl. It is creamy and mildly tomato with large chunks of clams. Cheap. Avoid the Greek spinach pastries because the pastry isn't always fresh and can be bitter. The chili is good and you don't pay extra if you order sour cream (comes with chopped chives) as a topping.
