i C8 -Sunday News, September 21, 1980 Year round apples near Okanagan apples could be available year round Advances in research in controlled atmosphere storage may make Okanagan apples available year round, according to Tom Edwards, Research Co-ordinator of B.C. Tree Fruits Limited. The company is con- sidering limited storage tests based on recent findings at ‘the agricultural research station at Kentville, Nova Scotia. Working with the McIntosh apple, researchers there claim that high quality Macs with a longer shelf-life will soon be available to the consumer 12 months a year. Under the present system of storage, quality is reduced in about six months. By making the large storage rooms air-tight, lowering the oxygen level to 1% or less and raising the temperature to ap- proximately 2.8° Centigrade, they believe storage potential for the apples doubles. Edwards comments that transferring research results to commercial application must be done with caution to food Edwards agrees that a few changes will have to be made in the present system if results are satisfactory. More refined measuring and monitoring equipment are needed because of close tolerances in oxygen and be certain that fruit grown in the Okanagan valley reacts the same as in other areas. “We will make limited tests initially and if we find there is an added storage potential, we would embark on a limited commercial application.” He says that B.C. Tree Fruits would expand the low oxygen procedure in line with marketing strategy from that point. Notes on Nuts by TROPIK SUN FRUIT & NUT The story of nuts and fruit has been told throughout history mainly because of their nutritional value, but also because of the mystical attraction these food items have created. Some are said to have medicinal qualities, others to promote beauty and still others to appease the wrath of the gods. From time immemorial these delicious foods have been a mainstay of our ex- istence. The oldest known civilization, the Chinese, use it in so many of their dishes that hardly a day goes by without eating nuts or fruit of one kind or another Let's look at each one indi- vidually in the next few SUN- DAY editions, a little history, a little information as to place of origin and a little mystique DID YOU KNOW? Peanuts are easy to grow So easy in fact, you can do it yourself as a house plant Take a peanut with the skin intact, Surround it with absor- bent cotton and place it in a small plastic vial with a hole in both the bottom of the vial and in the top of a tight fitting lid. A pill vial works perfectly. Fill the vial with water and allow it to drop through the bottom. Each day water in the same manner, repiacing the lid each time. In about four or five days a root will show, measuring approxi- mately half an inch in length. Remove the cotton wad with the peanut and root intact and plant it in good sandy soil. Your peanut will start to grow rapidly. As it’s flowers develop, the bud (male part) will fall to the soil and the female flowers will grow long enough to touch and eventu- ally penetrate the soil, thus fertilizing the plant The peanut will begin to take shape and grow Drop by our shop and we will be happy to give you a couple of peanuts to grow NEXT SUNDAY on the ALMOND nut Notes Freshness & Quality” The Best Available Under the Sun “as TROPIK SUN FRUIT & NUT Gallery Upper Level - Park Royal South HENS. eve Kilo so aesacnmr ane Najpteanrannceemasineeesasaiter its Aitehon Cy) Cray « Cabinet refacing * Traditional & European styling Manufacturers of Reynolds Cabinets Reynolds Furniture & Cabinet Co, 110 F en ave. north van, 985-9527 Where day old breads anal shightly damaged products are sole at tip fo Mon 5 00 288 Pemberton Avenue Sut 9 40 this fall...
