ee vr Al4-Sunday News, September 21, 1980 community roundup ~ West Van Youth Band loved Scandinavia Music is the language that everybody can understand, as the West Vancouver Band, under the directorship of Jeff Kenyon, discovered on their trip to Europe this summer. On June 29 the band left Vancouver for a three-week tour of the Scandinavian countries. The first stop was in Oslo, Norway, where they played three concerts to responsive audiences. The band members learned many things in Norway, including the important word “skol” and how to eat sandwiches with a knife and fork. After a week in Norway, the band went to Odense, Denmark, better known as H.C. Andersen's birthplace. The band members stayed with Danish families in and around Odense, and discovered that “Danish hospitality” is no myth. The complaint heard most often was “our billets feed us too much.” The band gave three concerts in Odense, and spent quite a bit of time practising for the com- petition in Copenhagen. The final week of the tour was spent in Copenhagen. There the band competed in a festival sponsored by an international organization called “People to People.” The band gave four concerts in Copenhagen, all of which were tied in with the festival. The best per- formance of the tour was given when the band competed against other bands in the Royal Concert Hall in Tivoli Gardens. The hall was a very good one, and the band’s performance superb. Of eight bands competing, West Vancouver placed fourth, behind semi- professional groups from England and Luxemberg, and another from Finland. Despite all the hard work, there was plenty of time left for socializing. In Copenhagen, the band stayed in a school with bands from Italy and Kenya, and folk dancing groups from Spain, France, Hungary and Poland. Every night, the groups would get together and dance until midnight or later. The band members learned folk-dances from other countries, and in- troduced the Pogo to Europe. Everyone made some terrific friendships. The band returned home July 19. Practices began youth band again the first week of September. The band is looking forward to an exciting year again this year, as it is their 50th Anniversary. They accept children of 10 years GIFT FROM WEST VANCOUVER is to the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen by West Van Youth Band tour director Fred Mine (left) during the band's successful summer tour of Scandinavian cities. or older. Workshops to assist buyers or owners of condominiums When purchasing a home appliance or furniture, most consumers take time to ask basic questions about the quality or warranty of what they're getting. Even automobile purchasers include at least a kick at some Of the tires. Yet when buyers shell out tens of thousands of dollars for a condominium home, amazingly they ask very few questions about the product they are buying, says Gerry Fanaken, President of Vancouver Strata Services. Fanaken will be in- structing two workshops at Capilano College this fall. The first, aimed at those prospective condominium buyers, will cover the ad- vantages and disadvantages of ownership, the legal obligations of owners and the condominium cor- poration, financing, by-laws, governmental mechanisms, and what to look for. The other workshop is for property managers or owners who want more information about the present Strata Titles Act. Having served as a resource person for the B.C. government in rewriting this act, Fanaken is” well equipped to lead an in- tensive seminar for people who have to deal with this legislation. Buying a Condominium is a one night course, but it will be offered three times this fall: on October 7, November 4 and December 2 from 7:30 to 10:00 p.m. Intended for prospective buyers, this course costs $15 per person. Development of Strata Titles Concept will run all day Saturday, September 27 at a cost of $25 per person. For more information or registration call Capilano College at 986-1911 local 321.
