He said a witness then saw the vehicle leave the scene. The police were called and they found that some crome and tin on Mc- Callum’s car matched that of the car that had been hit. While it was not certain how much damage had been caused, McCallum admitted the total was more than $200. This was the start of probably the most successful air-cooled engined car prior to the Volkswagen. For many years Franklin cars used a wood frame, which many claimed made a. quiet Car. Franklin started building 4-cylinder engines and, through the years, progressed through the manufacture of 6, 8 and even a 12-cylinder model, a magnificent car. The Patron of The Craven Foundation, Mr. Raymond H. Dietrich, was one of the favourite custom body designers and builders for the Franklin Automobile Company, as it came to be known in 1917. Prior to adding a dummy radiator to the front, many of the earlier Franklins resembled the French Renault but, bowing to the American taste, he was forced to make a_ con- ventional looking car. Franklin built a high quality line of automobiles for many years but, due to the pressures of the Depression, closed down in 1934.
