From page 24 Theatre. This fittle company, intimately bound-up with North Vancouver's talented Mackay family, has created a light-hearted look al the world according to man. A series of musical numbers, usually scored to ‘“found’’ tunes, takes a chronological look at feminist disappointments, weighted heavily in favor of the 20th century. The content offers little original thought but don’t think that was the point. Long-lived political movements will always stand accused of hav- ing no sense of humor and feminism has certainly taken its lumps in that regard, Shut Up Bitch is not nearly as nasty as its title and succeeds in terms of easy accessibility with its quick cheekiness and ironic wit. Strong performances from all of the cast: Tracy Holmes, Creona McDonald, Laara Sadiq and David Mackay. Capilano library celebrates work of | children’s author ONE OF the world’s best-loved children’s writers will be celebrat- ed at North Vancouver District Library's Capilano Branch this menth. Generations of children have enjoyed the. books of Arthur Ran- some. His adventure stories, set mainly in England’s Lake District, are a8 appealing to children today as they were when they were writ- ten in the 1930s. Although Ransome always plan- ned to be a writer, he was an unhappy and indifferent scholar. Groomed ta follow in the footsteps af his father, a brilliant scientific writer, he.was more interested in fantasy and ‘folklore and was a voracious reader of travel and bi- ography. ; He began writing for children when he .was 45. it was the Swallows and Amazons stories about a group of children and their adventures sailing small boats that captured the imagination of the reading public and made him an instant celebrity. In 1936, with the publication of Pigeon Post, he. won the first prestigious Carnegie Medal for Children’s Literature. Since his death in 1967, en- thusiasts all over the world have come together to form chapters of the Arthur Ransome Society. Kit Pearson, a successful children’s writer, is a long-time society member who wrote her masters thesis on Ransome. Next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., she will be at the Capilano Library to talk about “Arthur Ransome — the Man and His Books.” For more information call 987- fanmopacnan 64 7 he joy of the Fringe is the discovery of the unheralded production. #9 Held over at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre tonight at 9:15. Compramising Positions The joy of the Fringe is the discovery of the unheralded pro- duction. This was mine. Playwright Kim Falconer has yet to prove she can write in a voice other than her own; in other words, create characters and dia- logue, but Compromising Positions was an achingly honest and sear- ingly funny evaluation of one woman’s journey towards uncom- Promising independence. Beautifully acted and well directed by Wendy-Jane Bollard and Beverly Siver respectively. Reinember the name —- Falconer. Not About Heroes That perennial flower of the Cana- dian Fringe circuit — the English Suitcase Theatre — was back this year with a new translation and adaptation of Ibsen's Ghosts and Stephen MacDonald’s play about the relationship between two First Worid War poets. A gentle play, lovingly played, that ultimately told more of the poetic process than the horror of war that drove Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen to write. Unfortunately the script does not achieve all that it might have, leaving me wanting more Sassoon and Owen ard less MacDonald. A luminous performance by Wednesday, September 22, 1993 - North Shore News - 29 Nick Darcey as Owen, while Kevin ~ Williamson’s emotionally taut Sas- soon was hurt by director Sheens Wrigley’s inability to create the retrospective nature of the piece. la Ronde The strains of Strauss at the top of the show conjured pictures of sparkling dancers whirling madly in some incandescant orgy of celebration. But Arthur Schnitzler’s world of sexual duplicity and occasional freedom is much grubbier. The gulf between the face and the backside of society was daring territory for Schnitzler’s turn-of- the-century psychological insights. However, whether La Ronde is still relevant was hard to judge based on Mean Street’s produc- tion. Uniortunately, Neil Corbett’s di- rection never found the variations of mood and pace in the play, undermining the promise of Sue Elworthy and Mary Harvey. The men, as Schnitzler would have agreed, had their problems. oF ENED OO a Oe GY CB aKty SECOND CUP presents LIVES MUSIC Friday & Saturday evenings By Guitarist and Songwriter Bill Clint &, for bt eg ‘in warding off cancer, heart eT roa ay bret eatin and m,. eat crucial mate ‘VITAMIN CONFUSION! “There hus been a long-standing’ dispute about the ‘value, of vitamin supplements, with firm delievers ‘on one-side facing off against doubting skeptics who claim that our dicts provide iss with all the nutrition we need.
