the art of portraiture
has evolved to serve a
variety of functions:
historical record; a
remembrance of loved
ones; a token of friend-
ship and, above all, a
means of attaining
immortality.

Saturday at the Vancouver
Art Gallery, traces 400 vears
of portraiture, from

Renaissance masterworks to
contemporary photography.
The exhibition of 287 works
continues to Sept. 26.
Included in this major
tion are portraits by an
impressive roster of master
painters: Titian, Cezanne,
Renoir, Degas, Gova and
Gainsborough. The fine-art
photographs of Cindy
Sherman, Robert
Mapplethorpe and Yousuf
Karsh are represented in
addition to the sculpture of
Picasso and Matisse.
