She's even trav- eled isi an airboat through the Everglades. (And all chix only afer her retirement, Born in Vancouver, Trudie has lived on the North Shore for raost of her life. She was married here and raised her three children in’ Vancouver. Although a successful buver for the Hudson's Bay Company, Trudie leti work once her chil- dren were born and didn’t return to a full-time job until nearly 20 years later. Based on a letter submitted by one of her daughters, North Vancouver City Mayor Barbara Sharp, Trudie was chosen as “Mother of the Year” by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. She was honoured at an annual Mother's Day banquet on May In her fetter, Barbara said her mother taught “tolerance, thoughtfulness, manners, and the integrity by which she lives.~ Trudie, who was unaware that her daughter had sent the fetter, was surprised by the honour. “1 can’t believe it,” she said. “It’s wonderful.” Trudie is keeping busy. She says she's currently up to “just about everything.” Her latest trip.,has been to Las Vegas where she vacationed with her youngest daughter. Her only advice to other parents is to be there for their ’ children, advice she herself has followed with great success. As the letter states, “We could become nothing better than if, as her chil- dren, we were to emulate her example. We are because she is.” Extradition hearing scheduled A hearing will take place later this month in the Supreme Court of Canada concerning the extradition of two North Shore residents. Glen Sebastian Burns and Atif. Rafay have been in jail since their arrest in North Vancouver in 1995. The pair are charged with the planned murders of Rafay’s parents and handicapped sister in Bellevue Washington in July 1994. An undercover police investigation yielded confes- sions from the pair who were 18 at the time of the crimes. Burns allegedly bludgeoned the family members to death with a baseball bat as Rafay watched. The motive was Rafay’s inheritance. of life insurance and his parents house. Washington State has the death penalty as a possible sentence for conviction of such a crime. Former federal Justice Minster Allan Rock issued an extradition order without ask- ing for assurances from the United States for no death penalty. Two of three judges in the B.C. The hearing was held more than a year ago. Last fail, the court announced that no decision would be rendered as one of the judges had retired.
