That is how Vancouver's own rock 7n’ roll fegeid, deejay Red Robinson introduced to the Vancouver media Monday the songwritag du. behind the iatest Livent production, Smokey Jor’s Cafe. The nusical revue opened Tuesday at the Ford Centre. It plays there until Ocr. 18. Leiber and Stoller, both now 65, began their partnership at the age of 17 and went on to pen hun- dreds of songs including the hits On Broadway, Yakety Yak, Hound Boag and Jailhouse Rock. Stoller was in town for Monday’s chat session with Robinson. Leiber, who underwent open-heart surgery in the spring, did noc attend on the advice of his doctor. Among the rock ’n' rofl anecdotes Stoller shared Monday was the one about how he came to appear as Elvis Presley’s piano player in the 1957 movie musical jailhouse Rock. Leiber had written the words and Stoller composed the music to the chart-topper Jailhouse Rock, which Presley had recorded in *57. On set during film-making, the show’s . producers approach Leiber. “They took Jerry aside aad said, ‘We'd like you to play the piano in the movie,”” recalled Stoller. Leiber said: “But I don’t play the piano.” The producers answered: ‘Well, you look like one.” ” Leiber fell if] with a toothache the day of the shooting and sent Statier in his place, telling him: “They won’t know the difference.” They didn’t. Recalled Stoller: “I went to MGM studios and they said: That’s fine, just take the beard off — it’s a scene-stealer.” — Layne Christensen PESTS BEWARE!
