THE SEAL HUNT Over the past few weeks | have received a large number of phone calls and pre-printed postcards protesting the seal hunt, so | decided to share with you the results of my investigation into this emotionally charged subject. First, by way of background, | have to congratulate the International Fund for Animal Welfare for managing to organize such a significant “anti-seal hunt’? campaign, although, as my enquiry found, not everyone agrees that IFAW's portrayal of the present day sea! hunt is fully consistent with the facts. Nevertheless, their “phonathon” into North Vancouver has been well orchestrated, beginning with the sales pitch, and then foliowing through with a transfer of the call directly to my after-hours voicemail at the Constituency Office. On several occasions, my voicemail was filled to capacity, with almost all of the calls coming between 7pm and 9:30pm. Then, two weeks ago the postcards started to arrive at my Ottawa office, complete with comments such as “How can you politicians allow such slaughter” and “I am absolutely disqusted that people of your status and intelligence are this stupid.” CLUBBING SEAL PUPS For the record, a decade or so ago, | personally joined with many other Canadians in opposing the clubbing, and skinning alive, of baby seals. These days however, contrary to impressions apparently being leit by callers from the IFAW, the killing of seal pups is illegal and is not part of the licensed seai huni. Unfortunately, this fact does not seem to have deterred protest groups from using a picture of a terror stricken sea! pup on the pre-printed postcards they are handing out for mailing to MPs, and, as a result, they are managing to whip up some fairly emotional reactions amongst those who are contacting me. We need your voice, Doug ... are you sure you want to retire? This day is a victory for free specch, but let us never forget that freedom is something we will forever have to fight to maintain or, as current- ly is the case, it will slowly be eroded away by bureaucracy and regulation. Warwick Palmer Vancouver advertorial, November 26/97 the seal harvest is restricted to adult seals will be of no: comfort, even though there is little or no difference between the seal hunt and the commercial processing of cattle, pigs, sheep, and chickens for the freezers of in Atlantic Canada seat meat is featured in some restaurants and can also be purchased fresh, frozen and canned in local supermarkets. SUBSIDIES The Reform position on the seal hunt is that we are not opposed to the humane harvesting of adult seals in numbers consistent with maintenance of the population, but we ARE opposed to the Present practice of providing taxpayer subsidies to those invoived in the hunt. We feel that, just as for any other business, the marketplace should be left to determine whether the business is economically viable and intemationally competitive, while the role of the Government should be restricted to regulating the industry and setting the annual quota. According to Reform's researcher on this subject, the regulations already in place appear to be working well.
