Jepressi By Deana Lancaster Contributing Writer SUSAN Precious didn’t know what was happen- ing to her. It was 1974, she was 27 years old and a registered nurse at Lions Gate Hospital. She'd recently given birth to her third child and she’d never felt so low in her life. “As a nurse | knew of depression, but | didn’t think it could happen to me,” said Precious. What began as 4 post-par- tum depression escalated over a two-week period and result- ed in a complete breakdown. She became delusional and began to have _ paranoid thoughts. Precious said the next five years were “really awful.” She was in and out of hospital while doctors tried to find the right method of treatment for her. “J have a severe disease, major clinical depression,” Precious said. “But my illness is now greatly under control.” The West Vancouver resi- dent is now being treated by a combination of medication and therapy that she said “wipes out the terrible feel- ings.” Her depression stuikes in wick and intense cycles, but she has learned to recognize -signals that a cycle is coming on and gets treatment right away. “} get exhausted, irritable, anxious ...
