Time M MAL number of school closure days Dear Editor: lam writing with regards to the two new Community Interaction Days that my son’s school has this term, I-personally feel that these are two more unnecessary days off school for the students. According to all reports that I -have heard, the first Community Interaction Day was a dismal fail- ure. ; My husband attended the evening session at our son’s school, not that he wanted to go, but that he thought he should find out what this was all about. He reported to me that he thought the whole exer-" cise a waste of time. .' Did the minister and the govern- ment not take-into consideration that-in most families both parents work? . Who did they think would be able: to attend these Communily Interaction Days, which are sched- uled during the day? 4 There is added stress when par- ents have to find sitters or daycare . for their children. : L happen to, live i in the same area’ as the If-year-old children who vandalized a cemetery on the first Community Interaction Day. I have read that the professional days the teachers receive were pul in place so that they could gain knowledge about the Year 2000 project.; Now that the present gov- ernment has decided not to imple- ment the Year 2000 concept, why are the teachers still getting profes- sional days? Again more unnecessary days off school for the students when they should be in class leaming. The money that would be saved could be tised to equip schools with the updated equipment they need to teach the ‘students, so that the stu- dents are better prepared to meet the challenges of our fast-changing world. \ .In my cpinion there are far too many school closure days and this is also the common complaint with most parents whom I talk with. “Ts hope ‘this issue will be addressed for the school year start- ing in September.
