Award honors author’s work for peace AN AWARD inspired by the life and work of Mahatma: Gandhi will be given to Douglas Roche at a ceremony at Simon Fraser University (SFU) marking: Gandhi’s birthday on Fri- day, Oct. 2. Roche, an author, parliamen- tarian and diplomat, will receive the Thakore Award for his work towards disarmament, global peace and peace education. The award will be presented to Roche at 7:30 p.m., following the annual garlanding ceremony at the Gandhi bust (at 6:30 p.m.), - located in SFU’s science court- yard. His latest was co-written with Mary Jo Leddy and Victoria Bishop Remi de Roo, called In the Eye of the Catholic Storm, which looks at those issues in the context of the renewal and reformation of the Roman Catholic Church. Roche received honorary degrees from SFU in 1985 and from St. Stephen’s College, Edmonton in 1983. The first Thakore Award was given to former NDP leader Ed Broadbent last year. The award is given jointly through Simon Fraser University’s Institute for the Humanities and the Thakore Foundation, created several years ago by Natverlal HAZEL 2 CO.
