The handsome 100-pounder — part Black and Golden Lab, part English Setter and ‘Spanish mystery” — is so contident of his good looks that he’s enlisted the help of a Cinemazoo talent agent to help find him a career as a silver screen star, And according to owner Mary Salvadore, the locally-based Can- nell Films is interested in him. “He's a really beautitul dog,” says Salvadore, who brought Ben's grandiather Sam) to Vancouver from Spain. *'E get stopped all the time by people who want to know what kind of dog he is.” Ben, who turns two next month, wowed the judges at the recent third annual Pet Fair at the Plaza of Nations. The pooch beat out hun- dreds af competing dogs — most of whom were pure pedigrees — to win the Prince contest. The combinations worked well together and were an excellent accompaniment for the Salmon House bread: heated rolls flecked with flax seeds. My wife enjoyed a Spinach Salad ($5.95) from the restaurant's regular menu. A warm raspberry vinaigrette, with raspberry flavors kept well under control, brought out the From page 25 the restaurant's lobby. A better choice would have been to trade bons mots in the restaurant's lounge, which was filled with high spirits and the pounding sounds of a raucous R&B piano player. Still, the vantage point provided by a lobby can be interesting: the comings and goings of the hungry and the satiated are endlessly fascinating. And once we were seated, all was forgiven. Table Hopping staff looked out on a clear night over the glitter of Vancouver harbor, shading our eyes from the burst of adjacent camera flashes set off by tourists and others wanting to document their climb to the top of the aris- tocratic West Vancouver heap. Rather than losing my way in the extensive Salmon House wine list, | selected an ‘88 Freston Sauvignon Blanc ($26.95) from the evening’s feature wine list. it was a crisp and refreshing choice. Also from the fresh sheet, | sampled a gravlax-style salmon appetizer ($5.95). The fine strips of raw salmon, Marinated in sugar, sea salt, lemon and mint, were full of delicate fish Christmas Party? The prawns were served in an excellent tomato chili sauce that had a bold, spicy kick and vibrant flavors. A side dish of apple chutney, raisins and sliced banana added tropical flavors and exotic appeal. But the regulation vegetable complement was drab and super- fluous: tough, undercooked green beans, sliced carrots and a sprig of boiled broccoli. Service during our meal was fairly efficient, but lacked polish: | found myself having to refill wine glasses at our table.
