SHORE FORUM Seniors strategies discussed A PUBLIC forum, Seniors in the 90s — Planning for Healthy Living on the North Shore, which was held recently at the Delbrook Rec- reation Centre, attracted 130 peo- ple, almost half of whom were seniors. Sponsored by the North Shore Seniors’ Health Planning Project, a number of issues were raised that are important to seniors who wish to live independently and to re- main on the North Shore. Most of the retired people attending have raised their families in North or West Vancouver and wish to con- tinue to live in their familiar neighborhoods. “I don’t want to move to White Rock!"" ‘“‘Why can’t they bring back rent controls so I can stay in my apartment?’ said one angry woman from West Vancouver. Housing Management, and Dr. Jim Wilson, Chairman of the United Way Housing Committee, described various housing options. The panel on Transportation Planning, chaired by West Van- couver Mayor Don Lanskail, heard that it takes three buses and 12 hours for a West Vancouver resi- dent to get te Lions Gate Hospital to visit her husband. Other com- plaints had to do with pedestrian traffic lights which are often timed so that anyone who is not fast on his feet cannot get across the in- tersection in time.
