Pruning of Broad-Leaved Evergreens

Right now we are enjoying the spring beauty of Azaleas, Camallias, Rhodo-
dendrons and many other similar shrubs. Immediately after they finish
_btooming is the optimum time for pruning. Leaving this till latercan resultin little
or no flowers next year, as bloom buds are set during the summer.growing -
season. If a shrub is substantially overgrown, do not hesitate to prune severly
at this time, as new growth will soon cover the pruning scars. :

Gardening Tip

Many people are having an increasingly serious problem with weevil and
earwig damage to Rhododrendrons. (Notching along edge-of leaves). These
pests are nocturnal, spending daylight hours burrowed in soil or crevases. A
systematic insecticide is most effective (Cygon, System 2E) and you shoule Bm
drench the soil around the plants as well as a folial application. Persistance -
may be necessary, as these bugs are difficult to discourage, and repeat

spraying is suggested.
