PROPGSAL to put a group home for the
mentally disturbed in the 300 block of East
26th Sireet doesn’t make sense.

Although integration into a neighborhood would
provide a positive and healthy environment for the
nine chronically mentally il] eatients, putting them in-
to an established single-famil, <oned neighborhood is
not the answer.

A series of resident delegations petitioned North
Vancouver City Council Monday claiming the group
home would be incompatible with the neighborhood.
Residents expressed fears of decreased property values,
danger to their children, night-time disruptions of cries
and screams and communication difficulties with the
facility’s management.

Such fears ARE warranted. While a healthy en-
vironment is necessary for the group home residents, it
is also essential that the needs of the area residents —
who have invested their earnings, built their homes,
paid their taxes and raised their families in a single-
family zoned neighborhood — be met. Though some
concerns may never materialize, the residents should
not have to compromise their lifestyles by living in fear
and worrying about their financial futures if house
resale values drop.

Instead the provincial government and the iocal
health department should look to land surrounding the
hospital where the present character of the support-
system neighborhood is appropriate to accommodating
such a facility, or to mulli-zoned properties where the
neighborhood already supports many families, in-
cluding transient renters, and would be flexible to the
addition of a group home, Think again provincial
government.

makes culture an important con-
tributor to the economy. And the
arts are obviously a vital ingredient
of tourism — the key industry of
the future in B.C. All these wings
bring very tangible benefits for
business as a whole and individual
businesses should pay for their
share of those benefits.
