If North Vancouser District
Council gets away with its current
bylaw proposals to climate sec-
ondary or tevenne suites, North
Van and West Van will soon
follow suit.

To produce any potentially sue-
cessful effort to block, or at least
dilute, the district's intent, tenants
and their landlords will have to
unite and put forth an organized
well-planned opposition. Unless
owners/landlords and tenants
come together in a mass meeting of
their own, with the will and com-
mitment needed to rationally
prepare their opposition to Baker’s
and her colleagues’ intentions to
remove a significant number of the
North Shore's existing rental hous-
ing steck from the marketplace,
the deed will soon be done.

It does not take much imagina-
tion to picture the effect a legally,
community-mandated articulate
spokesperson would have if he
promised to initiate any and all po-
litical or legal action necessary to
bring about a fairer solution to this
issue. If such a spokesperson was
supported by volunteers, com-
munity-raised funds and a proper
community mandate, Baker and
her colleagues would have to do
more than listen, or they would be
forced to watch themselves ex-
plaining on the TV evening news
why they were deliberately
dispossessing people and depriving
others of badly-needed income.

{ confess I shall continue to
watch with interest this yet another
people-versus-the-sometimes-
beatable-city-hall.
