(Don) Venables of Hamiota, Manitoba was named presi- dent of the 640-member Ca- nadian Community News- Papers Association at its 66th annual meeting, held in Quebce City. His grandfather, C.W. Venables, founded The Hamiota Echo in 1902, and was joined by his father, F.D. Venables in 1950. The 45-year old CCNA president returned to the family business permanently in 5966. : Venables served on the directorship of the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association nine years, with two terms as president. He has been a CCNA director for four years, the past year serving as national vice- president. Following stints in the Echo office during school years, Venables’ first full term employment in the community newspaper in- dustry was in 1957, with the MacGregor (Man.) Herald, owned by Vopni Press of Portage La Prairie. He then went to the Rivers Gazette Reporter, prior to joining the Calgary Herald in 1963 for broader work experience. Three years later he returned to join his father in Hamiota, assuming con- trol when his father retired in 1979, Venables has been active in community work in Hamiota; is a past president of the Hamiota Lions Club, an honorary member of the Kinsmen Club of Hamiota, and an active curler. He and his wife Barbara Ann reside in Hamiota. Neither of his two sons have been enticed into the family business as yet. Trevor D, Venables is a sales representative with Louson-Desonite, while G.
