I bought one yesterday that is without doubt the best I’ve found in years, including both issues of ‘‘The Best of “‘Collectibles’’ is a 339 page collection of some of the most imaginative and well-written recipes around. I’ll vouch for the author, too. Shirley Louie and I spent a few years together back in our undergrad years in Home Economics at UBC, gutting chickens and doing other ex- citing things. She went on to become Business Manager of Food Services for the univer- sity, an exuberant world travellor and a fine cookbook author. . ‘‘Collectibles’’ is into it’s fourth printing which says it all, considering that the only advertising has been word-of- mouth. If you like great food, get one of these mght away — there’s not too many left. Must admit I sampled two or three myself — delicious! Previously frozen shrimp- meat at $4.99 a pound is another good buy at Wood. ward’s. Unfortunately, it’s usually thawed when you get it so you can’t re-freeze. CO;DRDINATED 1% cups mayonnaise 3 tbsp flour 1% cups dry white wine 6 large eggs, slightly beaten. Combine shrimp, cheese, celery and green onion; divide evenly among pie shells. Blend mayonnaise, flour, white wine and eggs. Pour a third of the mixture into each pie shell. Bake in a moderate over 350° 40-60 minutes until crust is golden brown. Garnish with parsley and a few heated shnmp. Serve immediately. If desired, bake, cool and refrigerate. Reheat at 350° 15-20 minutes. Note: ! cup milk and % cup whipping cream may be substituted for the wine. Butt shoulder steaks (fresh pork) are a good choice this week at Buy Low. Try marinating these in a sauce of 3 tablespoons soy sauce, | teaspoon brown sugar, 2 garlic cloves (crushed) and a good grating of cracked pepper. . Punch the chops all over with the tines of a fork and let them marinate for a few hours. BBQ siowly, basting often until fully cooked. Skewer a few vegies — onion, green pepper, mushrooms and cherry tomatoes to go along, brushing with oil as you grill. Serve with rice cooked in boullion with some parsley, almonds or pine nuts tossed in. Super Valu 1s the place to buy tomatoes this week — $9¢ a pound. Haven't they been a dreadful pmce this month? For a change, try broiling them with a topping of fine, dry breadcrumbs, melted butter and grated cheddar If you hollow about %’’ out of the cut edge of the spht tomatoes, you'll have more room for filling and everyoat likes lots Also, check the pork loin chops at $1.99. This 1s a big pack containing 2 mbs, 1 Wm. he Est. 1974 tenderloin and 6 centers. Pick out the nicest chops and freeze them for pan-frying later. Hide the tenderloin! Marinate the rest (try that recipe above) and toss them on the BBQ. Once every summer, it’s fun to buy a whole watermelon — chill it and eat it on the patio, washed down Stong’s for both snacks and for pizza topping. It’s featured at $2.99 a pound this week. _ The field cucumbers at 39¢. a pound are a good buy, too, at Stong’s. I’ve borrowed another of Shirley Louie’s recipes for this Chilled Cuke Soup, but that’s OK, she’s borrowed it from the Em- budget beaters with crisp white wine. Stir in: 1 cup heavy cream, “% cup plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons . tarragon vinegar, ! or 2 garlic cloves, crushed, 1 tablespoon finely chopped gerkins and salt and pepper to taste. Chill soup. At serving time, stir in 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh mint. The best bet in ground beef this week is at Safeway’s — 99¢ a pound for regular quality. If we get a couple of cool days this week, get one of those 10 Ib. bags and make up some meat sauce, meat balls in BBQ sauce and cab- bage rolls. Don’t miss the smoked pork shoulders at Safeway — 89¢ a pound. These haven’t been featured very often late- ly and my freezer has run out. They make the greatest last-minute, damn-easy meal — just pop in a pot and boil until done (about 1% hours, depending on size.)
