The Emily Murphy House
— a bungalow that can house
up to ten women and thet
children — was sponsored by

B.C. where battered women
can stay (for up to a month)
to get refuge from abusive
husbands, and decide how
they’re going to change their
lifestyles.

According to Kilcup, the
Emily Murphy House had
107 women and 104 children
stay during 1982. Many of
the women suffered from

head injuries, and in some
cases, sexual abuse injurtes.

Women who contact the
Emily Murphy House are
questioned to find out
whether they’re in immediate
physical danger If so, the

polhce may be contacted. A
battered woman 1s then sent
to the hospital to have her in
juries tended to. After retur-
ming to the transition house,
the women receive counsell
