C12 - Sunday, May 29, 1983 - North Shore News NAKA — START ON your side with your shoulders, hips and ankles in a line. Make sure you do this exercise without letting your hips roll back (a) Cross your top leg over your bot- tom leg and touch the floor with a pointed toe. (For better support, grab your foot with the top hand). (b) NOW LIFT your bottom leg off the floor and lower it back down. Do four sets of ten. Change to the other side and do four sets of ten. This exercise Is excellent for shaping the inside of the legs. Se ~ SSS cc DANA ZALKO For beginners it is impor- tant to Start slowly, and gradually work up into a faster pace. People of all levels of fitness can enjoy exercise without fear of shin splints, lower backaches or knee in- juries which are the most common elements. Here is a list of preventive measures that are worthwhile for your health and enjoyment: SLOW AND EASY - make sure that you warm up and cool down at each session. - every time you bend down, make sure you bend with a lot of control, not too fast, and bend your knees. - don’t hyperextend your back — always keep it Straight and make sure, in the mirror, that your posture is right. - don't exercise on a floor that is not cushioned. Jump- ing on a cement surface or any other kind that does not absorb the shock is more likely to cause injunes. And also, when doing floor exer- cises you will not bruise yourself or scratch your skin. - stretching should be done slow and easy — don’t bounce. - don’t do too much too soon. Take it easy on your body and let it get adjusted to exercising. - If you have any heart problem or high blood pressure or any other kind of problem, consult your doc- tor before you begin an exer- cise program. THINKING SLIM A strange phenomenon is going on among the “heavy- weights” of the world. All over the globe, people are living as if they did not exist below the neck. Their mir- rors are placed so that they do not reflect anything from the shoulders down. They spend hours fussing over hair or make-up, then flee with nary a backward glance at the rest of their anatomy. Rather than comfortable ter- ritory, as familiar as ... well, as the backs of theu hands, their bodies are a mysterious and forbidding wilderness, rarely explored because it’s something they don't really care to know more about. So, when you finish reading, take a moment to really look at yourself in a full length mirror. This is the self you present every day to the world, and it doesn’t hurt to focus on the good points. Then remember all the good things your body has done for you all these years: all the times it funtioned well despite stress, those periods of good health and strength for which we can nevér be too grateful. It hasn't been such a bad body, so why not acknowledge it? Yes, it may need some paring down. But hating your body, or ignor- ing it, will not help you trim it any faster. Perhaps it’s timre to get back im touch with your body, whatever shape it may be in, and then work to make it the very best body it can be.
