(Terry Peters photo) Indians take lacrosse title By PAT RICH The North Shore Indians are this year's West Coast Senior ‘B’ lacrosse champions and they now move on to compete against the best in the province. The Indians took the West Coast tithe Tuesday night when they downed the Vancouver Blue Angels 19- 12 in Killarney arena to take the best of five series three games to one. In a match curiously lacking in intensity, the Indians were ted by superlative attacking play by Jeff Gill and == strong goalkeeping from Ron Mclsaac. Gill, one of the top two offensive players) in_ the league during the regular season, scored five goals and had five assists in the game. In the first’ penod the Indians were losing 3-1 and then 5-3 before they erupted with three goals in the last minute to take a lead which they never relinquished. In the second period the Indians went ahead 11-5. But Vancouver managed to fight back to bring the score to 13- 10 at the end of the period. Throughout the first two periods both teams were fairly evenly matched, with the Indians holding a slight edge in both offence and defence. But in the third period the Indians took definite control over the game, extending their lead and blocking any Vancouves attempts to get back in the game. In the tast few minutes of play frustration on the part of the Vancouver players became evident and the referee called the game with S9 seconds remaining after the Blue Angels had drawn a couple of penalties for fightng. Gill was backed up by good offensive play from FOR ONLY 36.00 . In Ontario, they were treated like visiting celebrities, hounded by the media, and treated to such tounst delights as a tmp down the Barron’ River (worth the whole expedition) and a visit to Ottawa (nol quite up to the standards of a tnp down the Barron, but interesting). Now it 1s the turn of group of 15 young soccer players on the North Shore to show how well they can entertain a young group of visiting athletes. In the second half of ‘a government sponsored program, a group of Deep River, Ontario soccer players arrived in North Vancouver Friday for a 10- day visit of the area. For most of the 15 and 16- year-old residents of the upper Ottawa Valley community, it is first time other forwards. Barry Powless., another powerhouse on the side, had four goals, while Wayne Baker picked up a hattrick. If the Indians do win that tournament they will ad- vance to the national playoffs in Cornwall, On- tario. Next weekend the Indians compete in the provincial playoffs in Victoria. | | NO SCHOOL | IS BETTER | than its teachers —.. when Soccer players return the favor they have ever visited Vancouver and the West Coast. They are being hosted by members of the Burdette and McSween = soccer associations. But probably the highhght for the youths will come on Wednesday, August 26, they will play an exhibition match against their hosts, in Empire Stadium, prior to the Vancouver Whitecaps playoff game against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. The entire exchange took more than a year to arrange and has been made possible by a federal government grant through the Open House Canada _ program. Funds were also raised by the players themselves in a number of money raising projects.
