She was to ‘accompany . Coquitlam’s Jimmy Szabo, the only other Canadian selected by the Canadian Figure Skating Association to represent Canada in the Prague Skate international competition Thursday ‘to Sunday (Nov. 4 to 7) But an incident which occurred within a split- second in her life cut short her plans. It happened on. Thanksgiving day while training for the Prague event. Joyce was preparing for a double Lutz -- a move involving two full revolutions -- when.she had a nasty fall in the Winter Club rink. She was immediately transferred in the back of a pick-up truck to Lions Gate Hospital, ‘where she spent five days recuperating. “It happened so fast. I ‘found myself om my back. I heard a loud cracking sound... like someone were to break a piece of stick suddenly.’’ The sound Joyce was describing accompanied the pain she felt when the muscle in her hip was torn.. Commonly known in sports idiom as a hip pointer, the ‘excruciating pain is caused when the muscle attaching the thigh to the hip bone becomes torn in the middle. - While in hospital, Joyce was bedridden the’ first and second day. ‘‘The pain was sharp. It was like big long needles jabbing at me,"’ she . said, knitting her eyebrows. For the most part she was given pain killer, but perhaps the key to her remarkably ‘under quick recovery’ was her strength. my physical condition and the strength of my muscles got me out of the hospital.’ | An average person receiving | that. type of injury would | ‘have had to be on his back for three weeks, the S’4’" Grade 9 student quoted her doctor as saying. When! gottired I would sit in it and fall asleep.” Joyce and. her parents moved to North Vancouver in 1967, and she began training World Champion coach ‘Mrs. Linda Brauck- .man. So far the fledgling. ‘teenage star has earned 13 gold medals and three siiver, in both: local and provincial . ‘competition. In 1974 she won - ‘fro first place in‘ the Novice Ladies Manitoba Open Free Skate Competition and earli- er this year she won the Canadian Junior ‘Eadies in London, Ont. - No doubt, . her Prague disappointment was a big blow to her, especially since her recent injury was the third for her in a little over a year. ‘‘I was mad at myself. I really wanted to go. I just felt it was not my turn to get injured.” *‘My doctor said. BOUNCING BACK FROM three injuries, Joyce Fordyce prepares fer B.C.
