Robert, Arleene, Jessie and Hayden Ew North Vancouver Reader spins city schcol story Dear Editor: The story cf Deana Lancaster on May 26 con- cerning the future of the ald city hall at o4th and Chesterfield (Presentation House’s fate pondered) reminded me of an interes ing discussion I had in the 1960s or carly *70s with Judge Ray Sargent. My office as city clerk was located just to the left as you entered the building from 4th Street. One day I happened to be in the hall‘area at che foot of the stairs leading up to the council chambers and com- mittee rooms on the second floor when Toran inte the judge. He was chairman of one of the volunteer city groups at the time. I believe the Advisory —_ Planning Commission, which met up on the second floor. We got to discussing the old building and I[ said I understood it was really the first school in the city. Judge Sargent said “oh no” the first school is on the second floor. Naturally, this statement confused me. He then told me the first school was a one-room affair and when the main building was built later the original school room was raised up to the second floor (west) and the gcound floor built under it. While this information may not be of any help in deciding the future of the building, I choughe that ic would be of interest, particu- larly because of the reliability of the source.
