THE SPIRIT of a com- munity is often indicated by the holidays it chooses as its special days. Buring the early period of the North Shore, a day that emerged as important was Victoria Day. Perhaps it was the strength of Vic- toria’s empire that stirred the loy- alty of her people. Victoria’s birthday was celebrat- ed May 24, the idea of the closest Monday not yet having caught on — only if the holiday occurred on a Sunday was it transferred to the following Monday. North Vancouver had its May Day and its May Queen as early as 1927, a celebration in which West Vancouver participated — an Ar- chives picture shows a group of West Vancouver young — ladies aboard the back of a truck, ready to be transported to dance before the North Vancouver Queen. The Parent Teacher Associa- tions of Hollyburn and Pauline Johnson schools turned those murmurs into action, possibly with assisiance, although it is not documented, from the PTA of a third West Vancouver elementary school, Dundarave. In 1930, the two or three associations met jointly in the For- tune Cup Inn and decided to spon- sor a Children’s Day on May 24, At the May Day Ball of 1931, flowers were presented to Mrs. H.G. Selwood, under whose auspices the first May Day had been held. Presiding over this first West Vancouver May Day function was not a May Queen but a Miss West Vancouver, It is a reasonable guess that the sponsors wished to distinguish their efforts from those of North Vancouver. The honor went to six-year-old Mavis Whip- le. The May 30, 1930 edition of the West Vancouver News newspaper reports that Miss West Vancouver was attended by a court of three young ladies; Diana Chapman of Dundarave; Pat Hodgson of Pauline Johnson; and Bunnie Whipple of Hollyburn. There were three flower girls: Eileen Russell, Jean McLeod and Doreen Kearns See First Page 6 eTIDE TABLES=====3 Nine B&D 2. 3. 1 4 2 3. 1.
