Baritone wears his
heart on his sleeve

DOUGLAS Millar is no stranger to
singing for his supper.

Since moving to Vancouver from PEI five vears ago,
the affable baritone has crooned to customers at
Macaroni Grill, shared his vocal finery at funerals and
moonlighted with the Modern Baroque Opera
Company. He’s also, on occasion, stepped into Gerald
Van Wyck's shoes as conductor of the West Vancouver
United Church choir, which counts acclaimed tenor
Ben Heppner and Andy Hillhouse of Mad Pudding
among famaus former soloists.

Millar will return to the church: Sunday to present
Heart On Sleeve. The Vancouver Academy of Music grad

with renowned artist-teacher Marvin Keenze at
Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey this
fall. He'll need abour $80,000 co cover tuition and living
expenses during his ovo-vear course of study there.
Joining Millar in concert Sunday will be an array of
Vancouver musicians — musicians who, says Millar,
“take a loving approach to their audience.” They
include sopranos Heather Pawsey, Julia Bonnett and
Jennifer Zucchiatti; oboist Chris Jagger; Paula Kremer,
former member of the punk rock band A Day in Paris
and Jason Nett, guitarist with the Bluesberries. Sunday’s
concert is at 7:30 p.m. Admission is by donation.
