The recent News article thar covered the open house meeting on the proposed rede- velopment plan by local chio- rine producers CanOxy did not tell the whole story. Your writer summarized the plant’s redevelopment plans and risk assessment very well, yet failed to document how the public responded! to the plans at the open house. As the article pointed out there was approximately 50 people at the meeting, yet what was not covered was the fact that every speaker had impor- tant questions for plant opera- tors and the assorted cast of technical experts, with. regards to how safe the plant's redevel- opment plans and operations are for the community. The following are some of the issues raised by the public and from what I observed, were not properly addressed by Dear Editor: D Seek And Ye Shall Find epartment, I love it: on page 9 of the Oct.10 North Shore News there’s Stephen Aberle fulmi- nating that your letters to the editor pages should demon- strate “free speech” by giving an oe ee ee ee Peal — me on We found a new location at 736 Marine Drive. To that end, how do they expect residents to shelter themselves from winds that could direct chlorine gas their way? Since the plant manufactures a hazardous substance close to a community, with resultant Negative impressions (smell and risk) to in-coming. resi- dents, has CanOxy done a study to see if its operations affect property values in the surrounding neighborhoods of Maplewood and Seymour? Will they compensate home- owners if property values are proved to be diminished because of their operations? @ Because there is no protec- tive buffer zone around the plant (ie: no development), surrounding industries, ie: Allied Shipyards and others west of the plant}, would be subject to a risk that is higher than acceptable Canadian space to “screaming queers, bleeding heart minority lovers, militant feminists and the angry poor.” On pagel0 there’s con- tributing columnist Sandra McKenzie wringing her politi- cally correct hands about the emerging strength of the Promise Keepers movement io ~~-x 736 Marine Drive Watch for our Grand Re-opening Sale! 988-8788 guidelines, how is this reconcil- able with CaaOxy’s current operations? @ Since the amount of chlorine stored on site has changed, when can the public see revised plume maps that will indicate how a full chlorine release will be affected by northerly wind conditions directed at our neighborhoods? @ If che CanOnxy plant was to start up operations today in the North Vancouver District, they would be denied a business licence because the manufac- turing of toxic chemicals is not accepted by today’s zoning standards. To thar end, how can the plant ethically and responsibly continue to push its operations as a viable mem- ber of the business community and not accept a phase-out plan? @ Based on the fact that 99% of the questions at the open house were probing and nega- tive, I think it is fair to say that the public is still not comfort- able with CanOxy’s operation : | Seek new voices and ye shail find them across North America.
