Most of us remember to wear sun- screen when we head out to the pool or the beach, but the experts are now telling us that year-round sun protec- tion is just as important. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a whop- ping 80% of the visible signs of aging are actually caused by daily sun exposure, not the effects of time. While Americans spent over $3 billion last year trying to set the clock back on aging, and more than one million went as far as plastic surgery, the experts say that prevention is the best course of action and the daily use of sun protection is a habit we should all get to know. Linda Allen Schoen, director of the Neutrogena Skincare Institute, points out that the No. [ cause of skin damage is ultraviolet (UV) exposure. “Most people are not aware of how much exposure they get in ordi- nary activities when they're not in the context of having to worry about a sunburn, But it’s the constant, year- round exposure we get while doing ‘the most routine things, such as walk- .m ving the dog, carrying groceries to the car and so forth that can really cause the damage.” “In fact, recent studies show that in| Bt one year the average person walking to and from work gets zapped with more. than double the ultraviolet exposure of two weeks on the beach ‘without sunscreen. It’s compelling evidence of the need to protect our skin from these invisible rays — rays that can sear through makeup, clouds and even tain. Dr. Ellen Gendler, assistant clini- cal professor of dermatology, New _ York University Medical Center, says “daily sun exposure is dangerous to the skin because it seems that cumu- _lative exposure may be the greatest risk for the development of skin can- cers. Also, in theory, if one is exposed to sun on a daily basis, suntanning will occur. This chronic exposure can “also result in wrinkling.” Dermatologists like Gendler see dozens of patients each week with . Sun-damaged. skin, many of whom seek dermatologic attention because of skin problems related to sun expo- sure. According to Gendler, “Many of these patients ure under the age of 30 and, while they have not yet begun to. . show .the really dramatic aging changes, they often have early pig- mentary problems.” So what do the experts advise?
