composers, Bartoli has inimitably
managed to make this obscure
collection the Number (-selling
classical CD in North America.
Another of her recordings,
Rossini Heroines, has just been
nominated for a Grammy as Best
Classical Recording.

Both of these developments well
testify to Bartoli's unprecedented
populist appeal.

This particular collection, called
Arie Antiche — that's “antique |
arias’ or, more appropriately,
“ald songs’ are drawn from the
17th- and 18th-century Italian
songs assembled, arranged and
published in three volumes by

Alessandro Parisotti during his
research into such music during
the 1880s.

Curiously, he even kicks in one
of his own and then inexplicably
altributes it to Pergolesi,

However, his mativation for
assembling the collection is clearl
stated in his preface to the origina
publication (excerpted here from
the CD's liner notes):

“Given that nowadays the new
is becoming ever more scarce,”
Parisotti wrote “1 am happy to
see the old being resurrected in its
place, ...

course, this is a vitally important
factor for any recording, but of
particular consequence to vocal/
piano duets.

Equally important to this kind of
recording is a good marriage be-
tween accompanist and star. Of
course, no producer would delib-
erately create a mismatch, but re-
cordings like this one are often
