A SURROGATE family is in- vited to share special occasions with two mentally handicapped men who are in wheel chairs. The men, who are moving into a group home in the Lynn Valley area, are pleasant and fun to be with. The hours are flexible and orientation is provided. A ZOOLOGICAL society needs volunteers to join a conservation group, which meets monthly and participates in conservation activi- ties. An enthusiastic docent is also needed to escort school children on an interpretive walk through the Stanley Park Zoo during schoo! hours. Training is provid- ed. RECENT immigrants need friendly people to acquaint them with community services and facil- ities, assist them with the English language and to socialize with. Also needed is a tutor for one- to-one conversation with Chinese or Japanese students who want to learn about Canadian culture and improve their English language skills. The hours are flexible and orientation is provided. A VOLUNTEER who cares about the elderly is wanted to visit shut-in seniors to help then with their banking and assist them with their transportation needs. A person is wanted to teach knitting, crochet and crafts to in- terested seniors. The hours are flexible. On Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8:15 p.m. a mature person who is good with babies is wanted 10 babysit while mothers have a break at video night. Orientation 's provided. A PALLIATIVE care society needs compassionate people to of- Conference focuses on aging ‘ISSUES OF Aging’’ is the title of a conference being held on Friday, March 13 at St. Christopher’s Anglican Church. The program, which is open to everyone, runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1068 Inglewood Ave. in West Vancouver. “Successful Aging into the 21st Century’” will be the therne of an address ‘by keynote speaker, Dr. Chris Rauscher, who is the direc- tor of the Short Term Assessment and Treatment Centre at Mt. St. Joseph’s Hospital. He will relate his comments to the issues being considered in the workshops. Participants will have an oppor- tunity to attend two of four workshops. Mary Ellen De Grace, a social worker with North Shore Family Services who is coordinating the Palliative Care volunteers at Lions Gate Hospital, will be the facilitator for the workshop titled “The Issue of Euthanasia.’’ Margot Kiss, the legal informa- tion counsellor at North Shore Community Services, wil! lead the workshop ‘Putting Your Affairs in Order,’’ which will also address the issue of adult guardianship. “On Your Own But Not Alone” is the title of the third workshop, which shares ideas on social programs for seniors, and especially those that deal with alleviating loneliness. It will also include ideas on in- ter-generationa! programming. The workshop leaders will be Nelleme Fabbro of North Shore Health and Carol Neilson, pasto- ral assistant at St. Christopher's Anglican Church. The fourth workshop, ‘‘Grow- ing With Aging."* will be led by Hal deGrace, an educator well known at Lower Mainland seniors’ activity centres. Planning and setting goals for retirement years and developing one’s full potential will be among the issues discussed in this group. The conference is sponsored by the Unit on Aging of the Anglican Diocese and is being planned by representatives of North Shore Anglican parishes for churches in the area.
