Parents must teach kids about nutrition

snoop? I am! I can’t help
myself but § always look at
what the person next to me
in the checkout line is buy-
ing.

't has been said that if you want
to know what a woman is truly
like, look at what she carries in her
purse. Grocery carts are far more
revealing — and if anyone tried to
check out the contents of my purse
I'd likely beat them over the head
with it,

Yesterday, | was in line behind a
young couple. i felt ill when |
looked at what they were spending
a lot of money for! If there was
any kind of junk food they missed
I'd be surprised — chips, Oreos,
pop, cheezies, candy, chocolate
milk, ice cream — name it, you’d
see it.

Their meat purchases were hot
dogs and T-bones. There was a
head of iceberg lettuce and a cou-
ple of tomatoes but the oniy other
vegetable | saw was a bag of
frozen French fries.

Sticky buns and a couple of
frozen pies. Doughnuts. Have you
heard enough?

It is our duty as parents to teach
our kids survival skills. We can’t
turn this job over to the schools.
Every kid ought to be taught how
to cook, right in their home kitch-
er. Laundry? If your kid is over
eight years old he ought to be do-
ing part or all of his own laundry,
including ironing.

They must learn how to shop
wisely.

They must learn the basics of
nutrition.

We all scream at kids, ‘‘Clean
up your room!"’ How many
parents have taken the time to
show a kid how?

I had a wonderful compliment
from one of my future sons-in-law.
We were chatting over coffee —~
he’d come over to reattach my
kitchen intercom system for me.
We were discussing various
theories about child raising and I
mentioned survival skills — and
how it is up to parents to teach.
“You did a wonderful job!””

I glowed all day.

With that in mind, I’m going to
give you a couple of so-simple rec-
ipes that you can perhaps teach a
child or grandchild to prepare.

The first lesson 1 taught my
daughters was the difference be-
tween stable and unstable recipes.
A stable recipe is one where you
can do as you like — a stew is a
fine example — it's pretty hard to
ruin any sort of meat-vegetable
mixture, short of dumping a whole
box of salt into it.

Unstable recipes are a different
matter. When a cake recipe calls
for one teaspoon of baking
powder, it means just that. That’s
what a parent must teach a kid
how to measure.
