9 - Friday, February 9, 1990) - North Shore News Mayor, alderman lock horns CRIME ALERT over NVD _twin city scheme A WAR of words is brewing be- tween North Vancouver District Mayor Marilyn Baker and North Vancouver District Ald. Ernie Crist over a proposal to twin the district with a sister city in the Far East. By SURJ RATTAN News Reporter Council recently decided to strike a committee aimed at ex- ploring the Possibility of twinning with a sister city from the Far East, particularly China and the Soviet Union, in a bid to attract business opportunities to North Vancouver. That committee is expected to be made up of representatives from both North Vancouver District and City councils, the North Van- couver Chamber of Commerce, the North Vancouver Economic De- velopment Commission, the local shipbuilding industry and the Marine Workers and Boilermakers Industrial Union. But in an interview this week, Crist charged that district council has been too slow in appointing a representative to sit on the com- mittee. “‘Mayor Baker has refused to appoint anyone from North Van- couver District Council. I think it’s all politics,’’ Crist said. “I have the distinct impression that some members of council are afraid of showing any form of initiative on twinning with cities in the Soviet Union and China for fear that it might interfere with their political ambitions.” Crist, who works at Versatile Pacific Shipyards in North Van- couver, said the Soviet Union is in the process of awarding contracts for the construction of over 100 ships and added that it is the type of work North Vancouver could cash in on. "We have been very slow in North Vancouver, even though we have that (shipbuilding) business,’’ said Crist. He also said that he thinks he is the logical choice for council’s ap- pointee to the committee because HEARD YOU | MISSED Royal GM may have closed its doors but the same profes: sional yervice you've come to knew and appreciate has reopened, With aver 100 years of combined training these factory-trained technicians can service all your domestic and import cars and light tucks. Murray Dykeman has already been ap- pointed council’s representative on the committee and called Crist’s comments that council has not acted fast enough on twinning with other cities ‘‘absolutely astoun- ding.’ “This (twinning with other cit- ies) is a district council decision, not the decision of only one member of council,"’ said Baker. While she agreed there are business opportunities for North Vancouver in the Far East, Baker said twinning with another city may not necessarily be the route to take. “A formal twinning is not the only way to go, as the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has indicated,’’ said Baker, who added the district is also consider- ing entering into a formal business WESTPRESS DESIGN. & PRINTING FROM CONCEPT TO FINISHED PRODUCT lecycled paper availa 2443 Manne Drive. She cautioned that there needs to be ‘community support’’ for any economic relationships North Vancouver strikes with other coun- tries. Baker said that it is for that reason the other groups were asked to sit on the committee. North Vancouver City Mayor Jack Loucks said his council has not dealt formally with the new committee but added that it is something the council will consider entering into, even though the city has been twinned with the city of Chiba, Japan for the last 20 years. **We'd look at the committee,” Loucks said. ‘There are certain responsibilities that go along with being twinned with other cities and we have our hands full right now. Our relationship with Chiba is more of a cultural one than an economic one."’ | jardening Books Galore Selected titles RHS Indoor Houseplants Organic Gardening Concord Gardening Series FROM THE NORTH SHORE'S POLICE FILES THE FOLLOWING is a list of re- cent North Shore crimes: NORTH VANCOUVER CITY SOUTH Break and enter — 100-bIk.
