Firefighters, municipality frown on private fireworks displays LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS want this year’sHalloween to go out with a bang rather than a blaze. North Vancouver District and the District of North Vancouver firefighters are therefore once again co-sponsoring a Halioween night fireworks display to be held at three North Vancouver parks. **They're high hazard fireworks you’d see at Expo or any big event,’’ said Insp. Terry Abrams. The district is purchasing the fireworks and the firefighters will be setting them off. The goal of this joint effort, Abrams said, is to encourage resi- dents to see the free fireworks displays in a controlled environ- ment, rather than buy and set off their own. *“We’re trying to get away from people doing fireworks in their backyard and get them to come where they can see them for free,’’ Abrams said. Abrams estimates that last year 2,000 people turned out to each park. This year the 25-minute fireworks displays will be held at Norgaie Park, Lynn Valley Park and Panorama Park, starting at 8 p.m. If residents opt for their own fireworks, the North Vancouver District fire department cautions that the so-called family or low- hazard fireworks sold by retailers can spread fire and produce dense smoke. They can be sold only to people 19 years and older. Firecrackers are illegal to pur- chase, sell or discharge. Abrams said he heard firecrackers being set off as carly as the beginning of October and warns that the use of firecrackers and bottle rockets account for most of the accidents and burns at this time of the year.
