In particular, he wants controls placed on the exclusivity by for- eigners from Hong Kong who pur- chase parts of Vancouver and shut out the people of B.C. from the Thanks for Dear Editor: Many thanks to Doug Collins’ article March 10 publicizing the plight of Merchant Navy men who served throughout the Second World War and who were disallowed War Veterans Allow- ance and other similar benefits. The official reason given is that they simply were not members of the Armed Forces. By a stroke of the pen, the then minister responsible made the ex- cuse that ‘merchant seamen chose to remain at sea upon cessation of Children: are Dear Editor: 1 am writing in response to a Iet- ter from Mr. Bill Rodgers, alder- man, District of North Vancouver, that appeared in the Feb. 26 edi- tion of the North Shore News. Mr. Rodgers’ letter leaves the reader with the definite impression that the taxpayers of the District of North Vancouver have somehow “Jost” $400,000 on the transfer of land, between the District of North Vancouver and School District No. 44 (North Vancouver}, on which Dorothy Lynas School is being built. Without going into the in- tricacies of either municipal or schoo! district finances, I think it is VISIT OUR NEW LOCATION CHILLIWACK py 45460 Luckakuck Way ; 858-5729 Classifieds Sell 986-6222 market. What about American ex- clusiveness? Americans bought West Kootenay Power and Light (WKP), yet Canadians are not allowed to own American hydro- electric utilities in the U.S. To counter this unfair American exclusionism, why didn’t he either have the WKP sale stopped or permit the sale only upon condi- tion that Canadians be allowed to own hydro-electric utilities in the merchant navy column hostilities.." You see, it was their norma! occupation. Never mind that after particular horrific Atlantic voyages, etc., they still chose to go back to their ships time and time again. They were volunteers, not conscripts and as such, the major portion of the success of the war effort rested upon the transfer of men and ma- terials to the active war zones to say nothing of the food supply line to Britain. They didn't even get their own Merchant Navy Medal as in the First World War, presumably the winners worth pointing out that the people who pay municipal residential taxes in North Vancouver are, in general, the same people who pay school district taxes. Rather than debating about who **lost’? money on the transfer, it is more appropriate to consider who ‘pays’? for the transfer. When looked at from the ‘‘who pays’ point of view, it is clear that no one lost money on the property transfer. In the end, the children who will be attending Dorothy Lynas Elementary are the overall win- ners. Anthony J. Brummet B.C. Minister of Education U.S.2 Ownership of WKP already gives Utilicorp exclusive profits from B.C. users of WKP. Should our government now permit Utilicorp a gas-oil turbine at Oliver, B.C., then Utilicorp also gets exclusive rights to pollute the people of B.C. Reciprocal and remedial action by British Columbians to this one-sided affair is undermined by Davis and our government's because it was their chosen profes- sion. Alan Shard West Vancover subservience to American ex- clusivism. This subservience, while providing purposely weak foreign ownership regulations for Ameri- can business, also opens the door for Hong Kong exclusivity in B.C. To eliminate Hong Kong ex- clusivity we must also eliminate American exclusivity. To this end, why hasn’t Davis demonstrated our new position on foreign own- ership by having WKP repatriated and the gas-oil turbine denied? In- deed, his failure in this regard is hypocrisy, considering he barked loudly at Hong Kong exclusivity. To now roll over and play dead for Utilicorp of Missouri would confirm the public’s growing belief that he and our Americanized gov- ernment are the real threat to our way of life.
