New .C. social housing program finds financing MINISTER RESPONSIBLE for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Stewart McInnes, and Minister of Social Services and Housing, Claude Richmond, recently announced plans for fi- nancing the 1987 Social Housing Program through private lenders. A total of 1,225 new social housing units will be constructed for needy households in British Columbia as a result of funding commitments by the federal and provincial governments. The units will be designed for families with children, senior citi- zens, older singles and the disabl- ed. Construction and land !ease costs amount to approximately $65 million. In order to secure financing, the British Columbia Housing Management Commission (BCHMC) called for interim and five year financing proposals in October 1987. Fifty-four financial institutions, including major banks, trust com- panies, credit unions, insurance companies and mortgage brokers, were invited to submit bids. Thirteen bids were received. But the auxiliary also assists in the purchase of much less dramatic but necessary pieces of equipment as well as programs that contribute to the well-being of the hospital’s patients. A recent commitment of $55,000 from the auxiliary has enabled LGH to purchase and install 380 blood pressure cuffs and 180 ox- ygen flow meters in nursing wards. Blood pressure cuffs are used in a basic diagnostic technique that is performed on all patients. Oxygen used for patient treatment in the hospital is piped into the wards and requires a flow meter for its use with a particular patient. The hospital’s limited number of oxygen flow meters and blood pressure cuffs had been kept in the special treatment areas. The purchase of additional cuffs and meters for the standard nurs- ing wards will result in saving staff time and providing more efficient patient care. Approximately $8,000 is provid- ed by the LGH Auxiliary each year for materials, recreational items and programs in psychiatric day care and medical social services and the transportation and social services programs in Evergreen House.
