Mailbox —__ on’t let them grind you down Dear Editor: Perhaps you should re- consider continuing your support of the Press Coun- cil. I sense they are letting themselves become in part the punitive instrument of an implacable pressure group that is enraged at Collins for Hunter hog wild Dear Editor: Shame on you, Bob Hunter, for spending $180 ona meal! Have you ever stepped back to consider how insane it is to spend money like that on mere food? I remember in thd early days of .Greenpeace when you didn’t have two quarters to rub together. Now you are going hog wild! You know that you can get a perfectly good meal at a department store for about $10.00. What’s the extra” atmosphere worth — another $10.00 maybe? Let’s get back to sane eating! . R.E. Underhill Vancouver What’s a dollar worth Dear Editor: Westerners may not be aware of a plan underway in Ottawa that could see the elimination of the One Dollar Note in Canada. The adver- tising for comments and sub- missions appeared only in the Toronto Globe and Mail which may explain the situation. If this is a concern to them I suggest they write to their Member of Parliament now expressing their wish that Dollar Notes be retained for circulation in this country. if they did not write on the metric question they may be more inclined to state their objection to this new proposal. As a test remove all the One Dollar Notes from your wallet or purse each day fora month and set them aside. Trying to get along with only the higher denomination bills will soon show how inconve- nient it will be without the Dollar Note. Shirley Colligan Ottawa, Ont. mentioning a book that questions our received truth. In a recent Maclean's Barbara Amiel wrote that Zundel grew up with the media “'... telling him that he came from a race of hideous, bloody murderers. The fact is that he did.” (Four million good Ger- man-Canadians said ‘‘Real- ly?!') A few years ago Simma Holt in a print interview said, ‘“‘scratch any gentile and you'll find an an- ti-Semite.”* Jessica Mitford in her autobiography, and John le Carre in “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy’’, both gratu- itously gave their opinions that Canadians are a ‘‘foul people.’”’ Do the Germans, gentiles and Canadians have some Greater Press Council or Grand Sanhedrin they can complain to? But of course everyone knows that today’s Zeilgeist allows of only a few privi- leged groups; just as we ail know that if Collins’ column had offended, say, the Ger- mans, Catholics or Arabs, the princely mullahs of the Press Council would never have summoned you and him to their grand consistory — to be acquitted of heresy, but nevertheless gored by obiter dicta on what can on- ly be matters of style or taste — or editorial judgment.
