FOR THE FIRST time in Sea Festival history the Labatt’s Media Softball Tournament trophy i is on . the North Shore. . With Ceperley Park the battleground for a totally awesome display of softball supremacy, the North Shore News team went through the week-long tournament allow- ing only 20 runs in 4 games while scoring 58 runs against their opponents. Wednesday July -11, the News first competition was the Westender newspaper which yds totally devastated by a T9-5 score. One of the many highlights of this thrashing was a grand slam home run by Garry Crossley. On the weekend, with the competition getting increas- ingly more difficult, the North Shore News rose to the occasion. The News now had" to play the Vancouver Sun in a semi-final match at 1 p.m. Sunday. Again -the News was behind 4-2 aftef 5 i innings but ralliéd to tie the score in the 6th inning 4-4. The News now had to wait 2 hours in the blistering heat while CKWX and BCTV played their semi-final game. At 5 p.m. Sunday, the tournament final got under- way with the North Shore News and CKWX fighting it out for dominance in Media Softball. The News got off to a phenomenal start scoring 7 runs in the top of the first in- ning to totally demoralize CKWxX. The News coasted to the top of the Sth inning Botnen to ANITA BOTNEN proved why she is the Canadian gymnastics champion. Over the weekend, the West Vancouver teenager earned herself a place on the Canadian Olympic team with a gutsy per- formance in spite of a nagging and painful back injury. Many had felt that WHAT'S GOING ON when Crossley’s bat came to life'as he hit his second grand slam homerun of the tourna- ment making the score 12-1. The News went on to a 16-4 win, clinching. the much heralded Labatt’s traptiy as Champions of .the 1984 Labatt’s Media Sea Festival Softball tourhament. . The peaching duo of Ken Elliott’and Bing Crossley have to be commended for their excellent job of holding the team together and prepar- ing them for each opponent. This tournament win was a total team effort and the North Shore News looks for- ward to defending their title next year. Olympics Botnen would be unable to overcome the injury enough to make the team. Competing in Califor- nia at a dual training, final selection camp, the former member of Flicka proved her mettle and made the team along with Flicka teammate Bonnie Wittmeir and five other women gymnasts.
