B2 - Wednesday, January 25, 1984 - North Shore News 1 CAPILANO COLLEGE men’s basketball team had no trouble winning two straight league games over the visiting Okanagan Lakers this past weekend. By MARK O'REILLY *Friday the Blues beat the Lakers 88-53. It was a blowout in the truest sense. Blues led 14-0 before the Lakers managed a bucket, and the half-time score was 51-28 for Capilano. Mark Marter and Pino Perovic led the Blues with 19 points each. . The next night the same teams had a closer game, but the result was a _ repeat. Capilano won 98-84 led by Marter and Steve Campbell with 19 each. Pino Perovic and 6-9-- ‘83 Carson Graham Pipers peg grad John McEwan each had 18. McEwan had probably his best weekend as a Blue as his strong efforts forced Capilano’s domination both nights. Saturday’s contest had a bit more drama to it than Fri- day’s. Blues led by 11 (49-38) at the half, stretched that to 17 (74-57) mid-way through the second-half, and then went to the bench to give everyone some playing time. The Lakers managed a slight comeback, but the final spread (14 pts) showed there wasn’t much life left in the men from Kelowna. The women’s team at SENtOR BOYS Basketball action this past week was highlighted by the play of Peter Therrien’s Argyle Pipers who advanced from fifth position to third spot in league standings defeating both the Carson Graham Eagles and Hillside Highwaymen. By KEN SHERK On Monday January 16, the Pipers were involved in a heated contest against the Carson Graham Eagles who led at half time 40-32. However, the Pipers came storming back in the late third and early fourth quarters to score 22 unanswered points and take a 56-46 lead. Vern Porter’s troops never gave up and they turned around and pot- ted ten straight points in the final minutes as the Eagle’s Paul Simmons dropped a bucket with three second re- maining in regulation time to force overtime with the score tied at 56-56. In overtime the Pipers got off to a strong start scoring the first two hoops, forcing Carson Graham to play cat- chup. Eagles narrowed the Margin to one point with seconds remaining but it pro- ved to be too little too late as the Pipers sealed a 69-65 vic. tory from the foul line. Argyle sharpshooters saw Don Landberg notch 18 and Derek Moore net 16 points.
