We hurried our dinner in order to shove our arms and legs into boots and mitts and our heads into toques, and so out into the strange muffled cityscape, aureoles around the street-lamps. Up St. George’s to 17th and on up 17th to the boulevard, and it was getting deeper al! the time, a clean fluffy carpet..underfoot. We found some sidewalks without a footstep on them, which made us feel like the first — or the last — people on earth. Occasionally we'd hear or pass young people with little kids holding their mouths open to the sky, shrieking with the little shock of snow in the throat, and light on the eye-lashes. Some boys tried valiantly to build some enduring snow- sculpture that, lasting into the daylight, would make the magic real. It cost forty cents each, whatever it was, SO we emerged from the theatre with two hot dimes, which was enough for a cou- ple of rollicking hot chocolates next door. the kitchen ranger by Eleanor Godley sent to you is a lot of un- forgettable experiences, It was a little thin slice of a coffee-shop but it was warm and bright and postponed our snowy return walk while the pleasure of the movie slowly ebbed. We sat up to the counter and watched the counter-man prepare our treat. He used some sort of ready-mixed stuff, which frothed in the hot milk, and we edged a bit closer to get our hands on the cups. But oh my — he’s reached into the cookie-jar and he’s putting a cookie on each saucer! Should we tell him — well, he can just take it back again, as we can’t possibly afford it. That’s all right. But now he’s whipping cream! Good grief, he’s spooning some of it into each of the cups! We squirm with embarrassment, and mutter to each other about washing the dishes. We wring each other's fingers under cover of the counter, and wish we'd just gone home. Here he comes, now, sliding the two cups towards us on _ the counter. ‘‘That’ll be twenty cents,’’ he says.
