B2 - Sunday, May 29, 1983 - North Shore News If anyone has counted out Stongs in league this season, they have another think coming. Stongs took on the Capilano Lions twice this Slaney had a us. double in the game to top the Cap’s by a score of 6 to 4. Later in the week, Stongs came on again stomping the Lions 5 to 4 with Mike Slaney pitching a —strong game. In a squeaker, Skyline lost to Cap Lions 5-4. This was by no means a pitcher's duel even though John Ridd for the Lions showed a lot of power, Skyline’s Andrew Shandro and Earle Birney were outstanding. Skyline's lack of hitting power cost them the game. Highland has yet to win a game this season but, they look more promising each time they play. Any team that underestimates them, could be in for a surprise. Some fine players on Highland like Bobby Cowie could turn the team around in the coming weeks. In Minor league action, Mac’s are still in the lead having only lost thrée of their last 10 outings. Hot on their heels, is Dunn's Tailors who have only lost two and won five. The reason for the discrepancy is that Dunn's have had three rainouts and have to catch up in the games played. This too is shaping up to be a two-way fight to the finish. * In the Pee Wee Division, The Yankees are the out front leaders with eight wins and one loss. The Expos and Indians are tied with four wins a piece. An interesting new aspect to Forest Hills baseball this season is the addition of the new Cleveland Park on Nan- cy Greene Way at Prospect. This field came on stream for baseball late last June. But, the real use of the park began this March with all Minor league ball games be- ing played on this new Dia- mond. It is without doubt one of the most beautiful and scenic baseball ficlds anywhere in the Lower Mainland. It sits just below Grouse Mountain and overlooks the panoramic view of Van- couver. The Parks Board has done a fine job of laying this facility out. The only item missing, is benches for the boys in the dugouts. There is no finer park to watch youngsters play bascball than Cleveland Park. STANDINGS wok Pt MASOR DIVISION Capfanc Lice: 7 3 14 Skyline Sports 6 > 12 Stomgs 6 9 12 Highinad Optical ° 0 0 . In the fourth inning, Kevin Beck had a 2 R.B.I. hit which drove Kevin McLeod and Gordon McInnis home for the 3-2 win. In Colt “B” play, the Tech “X” team has won 8 straight games. Tech “X” is yet to be beaten this season. This junior Colt team is coached by Rob Hargrove and will be a team to watch in the tour- nament this summer. This past weekend the An- nual Sun God Tournament hosted by North Delta's Pony League featured an 8 team tournament under sun- ny skies. Capilano’s team represented by Caps, Super Valu played West Van into extra innings by virtue of the fact a suicide squeeze play executed by Capilano in the sixth inning forced extra inn- ings as the game was tied. West Van came back to win in the seventh. Capilano’s 2nd loss was to Newton by a score of 7-6 which eliminated Capilano from the tournament. The final game in the Sun God Tournament saw West Van- couver take on Newton. West Vancouver won it 13 to 2.
