_ By JUNG FRANKLIN In 1980, American Artist Magazine named him Artist of the Year, and in 1981 his painting Loons in an Arctic Setting was chosen to be an official wedding gift to.the Prince and Princess of Wales from the Government of Canada, Scores of other Robert Bateman . works are highly prized by collectors all over the world. Some of them generously agreed to lend pain- tings for a travelling exhibition, Images of the Wild, which has brought .-more than seventy Bateman masterpieces to The Vancouver Museum. Inevitably, critics have compared Robert Bateman to fellow-Canadian painters Den Danby and Alex Colville, and he himself is the first to acknowledge the crucial influence of Andrew Wyeth. These artists too are realists of the J-am-a-camera school. Their work, like Bateman’s, appeals to the vast number of people who don’t know anything about art,but who. do know in- stinctively when they're looking at something superb. It has been remarked that - differing subject matter apart - Bateman offers a -fleeting view, wheréas other realists’ work suggests. timelessness. Like. the pre- Raphaelites - Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Holman Hunt, re Brown - whose’. dream-like “ paintings illustrated -single moments from literary works, Bateman rivets our attention on the brink of a happening. In all his works, something is stirring: the barn owl is on its way to a perfect. landing, the bull moose is sizing us up ‘vefore-he- “makes“his-move:- “Jt is this ‘miraculous illusion ofmotion that, perhaps more than any other single quality, sets Robert ‘Bateman apart from most other wildlife artists. painting. today.
