For the first time in its history, the AHA has taken a strong stand regarding the diet-heart disease issue. Now, it reommends that EVERYONE reduce their intake of cholesterol and fat, especially saturated fat. In the past, this advice applied only to those at risk of heart disease. The typical diet has about 17% of total calories as saturated fat, which should be lowered to 10%, advises the Association.
