C6 - Wednesday, July 23, 1982 - North Shore News ABOVE ALL, KEEP YOUR HUMOR Mom and daughter ‘doing’ Europe I really enjoyed the following letter because the writer is practically assured of having a wonderful time. She’s got the perfect travel companion — her own daughter. And, I speak from experience, having travelled far and wide both with my mother and all of my daughters. Dear Barbara: I've enjoyed your travel articles and saved the ones on Hawaii. Found them very helpful. The ones on Europe sounded nice but never thought they would apply. Now I have received ar invitation I cannot refuse My 21 year old daughter who is in England has written to . suggest that I come and join her for a month’s holiday and go hostelling in Europe. Realizing distances to travel from London I wonder how much we can expect to do. Is a Eurail Pass a good idea? Maybe we should fly to Athens and work our way back. Would we be better doing an organized tour of Greece and the islands or organize this when we arrive as day trips etc. Perhaps we should forget Spain and Portugal and concentrate on Greece, Italy and Swit- zerland. Do you know anything about hostels? Nancy said she has met several older people in hostels in France and England who really seemed to be enjoying themselves. I have joined the hostel assoc. What about clothes? How do you figure out how much’ money per day? Can I take my curling iron or do I need an adaptor? What about MILWAUKEE (UPD - At least three cases have been documented involving people who go into severe shock if they engage in strenuous physical activity immediately after cating celery, an allergist says. One month isn’t a great deal of time to do all the things you want, especially by train. Id certainly fly to Athens and work back from there. You'll find that organized tours are great time-savers but [ve always had the best results with short ones, two or three days, booked on the spot. In late September, you shouldn't run into problems as far as space available. Another alternative is to fly as far as Venice and book A fourth case involved not just celery, but any kind of food. “If he had a hamburger and then went out to mow the lawn, boom, he was in shock,” the doctor said. Fink said the threc with the celery problem liked celery and therefore were more likely to have caten it before cxercise. ye eleey a one-week cruise of the Greek Islands and Dubrovnik. Check out Costa Lines — all agents have the brochures. You are wise to forget about Spain and Portugal on this trip for several reasons. First, if you look at a map, you'll see that the distances are pretty formidable. Second, Spanish trains are the slowest in Europe — not too bad in the North but working on the “manana” system as you get further south. By careful planning, you can get the most out of a Eurail pass. Pd buy a two- -week one, allowing myself just that much time to get across Europe from perhaps Venice (going by boat from Athens to Venice). To give you some idea of time in- volved, the train trip from Genoa to Basel, Switzerland takes about eight hours. Another eight hours will land you in Amsterdam. You can make as many stops as you like along the way. My personal preference is Holland over Switzerland but ['m sure to get some arguments about that! By all means try the hostels. They are cheap and generally clean and you'll find people of all ages using them. You'll want to travel light — ask anyone who has lugged baggage on and off European trains! Deliver me from back-packs -— bulky, uncomfortable things. A small, soft-sided suitcase on wheels and a edium-sized shoulder bag (purse) will hold everything you need. Above all, pack some warm clothes. Northern Europe in October can be colder than Hitler's smile. Central heating, if it exists at all, is rarely turned on before the end of October, even if the water in the toilet bowls has turned to ice. Include a long flannelette nightgown, wool socks, a thick sweater and a warm robe. Ill lay odds that you'll wear it all to bed on many nights. It’s hard to figure costs but you can get an idea of the price of hostels from the Canadian association. In a modest ‘restaurant you should get by for $5-$6 for the tourist menu. Most places add the service charge (tip) to the bill so watch for it and don't tip twice. Look for working men’s cafeterias, delicatessens and snack bars for cheap lunches. My system is simple —I take the money I have, divide by the number of days Tll be away and that’s what I have to live on — including hotel, food, taxis (more often buses!) and supplies. If I run short, I carry a Visa card. Always have $100 set aside for emergencies. Unless your curling iron is dual voltage, it’s useless in Europe. In addition, you'll need a set of adaptor plugs — major department stores | carry them. Vancouver readers can shop at Gullivers in Park Royal.
