A2-Sunday News, November 9, 1950 | | _Strictly personal by Bob Hunter Home from the sea - I A North Shore couple, Myron MacDonald and Leslie Norris, have returned from a round-the- world odyssey in their 36-foot sloop, Wings I which is now tied up in Mosquito Creek. They set out in 1976, went to Maui, Hawaii, down to Fanning Island, over to American Samoa, In- dependent Samoa, Fiji, the Solomon Islands, Australia, across the Indian Ocean, Stopping at Rodriques and Mauritius Islands, to South Africa, across the Atlantic to Fernando de Noronha, off the bump of Brazil, up to Tobago, through the Panama Canal to the Galapagoes, over to the Hawaiian island of Oahu, where they hung a hard right and made their way home. Myron is a doctor who practised for nine years im West Van before setting out on the voyage, and who, incidentally, has returned to his old practice. Leslie is an. avante garde craftsperson who ran a little clothing and jewellery shop on Lower Lonsdale, called L’Ouef. When they set out, there was some concern on the part of their fnends that between Myron's gentle nature and Leslie’s artistic sensitivity, they night not have the Right Stuff to circumnavigate the whole actual planet, fighting storms, sharks, pirates and Were you lucky ? And as a bonus, just like in a romantic novel, Leslie is pregnant. Adventures? Well, remember that an adventure is what happens when everything goes wrong. Indeed, they had many adventures ... The one that occurred at Fanning Island was the most hair-raising. Fanning is near Christmas Island, in the absolute middle of the Pacific. There, they saw six- toed cats called Christmas Island Cats, a legacy of British nuclear tests that were carried out many years ago. They were anchored in a cove. It was night. They had been partying. Making an uncharacteristically poor decision, the good doctor plunged into the water and started to swim toward the boat. Too late, he heard a voice from the shore yell: “Hey, watch out for the tide!” Myron recalls: “That's when I noticed the village lights sweeping by at six knots. Next stop, Japan. I was terrifically frightened. | knew there were tiger sharks out there, waiting for the tide to empty. Tiger sharks are the most vicious of the lot. I knew I'd made a very bad mistake.” The two hours he spent in - the water seemed lke a lifetime. “] became immediately lucid. I could feel the sharks moving in the water around me. I swam as strongly as I could perpendicular to the current. I tried to pretend not to be frightened. I told myself: Don't act like food!” Obviously, it worked. He finally reached a tide eddy, which saved him from being washed further out to sea, and crawied exhaustedly back to shore. “Gee, I was delighted to be alive,” he says.
