John Eaves of Montreal took the combined events World Cup title for the third year in a row, and ex- Vancouverite Stephanie Sloan of Toronto took the Women’s World Cup for the combined events, firming that Canada is still number one in Freestyle. ' There were 100 in- ternational competitors in the three day event, 90 men and 10 women, representing Canada, U.S.A., Germany, . France, Austria and Swit- zeriand. > Grouse Mountain was the final stop of the cight ‘contests on the World Cup Tour. There was a real carnival atmosphere on the mountain top as the final events, the mens and womens aerials, took place on Sunday. Sky divers and hang gliders competed for crowd attention, but the real stars were the skiers, and in the mens aerials event Canada led all the way with Jean Corriveau in first place, John Eaves, second, and Pierre Poulin in third spot. In the womens agrials Lea Hillgren of the U.S.A. was firt, Stephanie Sloan, Canada, second, and Mary Beddor of the U.S.A. third. In the moguls events on Friday, Nano Pourtier of France was first in the mens contest, with Ernst Garharmer of Germany second and local ski hero Greg Athans third for Canada. Hillary Engisch of the U.S.A. won the womens moguls with Mia Engi of Switzerland second, and Stephanie Sloan third for Canada. On Saturday it was Ballet, and in the mens ballet Ernst Garharmer of Germany was first, with Bob Howard of the U.S.A. second and Mike Russell, U.S.A. third. Janene Bucher of the U.S.A. was first woman in balict Registration for Junior membership and six weeks coaching for beginners, intermediates and advance, will be held at Capilano Tennis Club, Saturday ~ with Katy Murphy of the U.S.A. in second place and Hedi Garharmer third for ’ Germany. The mens , combined Grouse Mountain contest was won by Steve Réezendes of the U.S.A. with teammate John Beddor of the U.S.A. second and Canada’s John Eaves in third place. For once the weatherman was on our side and the three day event brought enthusiastic first which takes place at Whistler Mountain, April 7th and 8th. It takes the form . of a dual mogul contest and it’s a great way for you and your friends to find out how | well you can really ski. The Ski Bump contest is open to all skiérs over 19 years of age of any ability. Registration is on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 noon atthe Whistler Mountain Ski School office. First round starts at 12:30 p.m. that day. This will be a dual mogul event on an intermediate m run with CSIA in- structors judging com- petitors on turns and con- trol. Speed is not a major factor in this event. You get two runs to try and make it into the top 32. On Sunday there is a practice session from 9.a.m. to 12 noon, with the finals going at 12:30 p.m. ‘when the top 32 skiers from ~ Saturday’s qualifications compete again in a dual mogul format, only this time . it’s on an elimination basis on the toughest mogul run on the mountain! Heli-ski. passes and Salomon. 727 bindings are amongst the prizes to be won. . Cross country types are well into the spring touring bit, and if any of you are - looking for somewhere to go at Easter, you may be in- terested in a trip to the Cariboo. Benno Jaeger has a tour leaving for the 100 Mile House area April 12th, returning Vancouver on April 15th. Bus tran- sportation, ski lessons, accommodation and. all meals are included.
