The amendment represents a potential 200 new
jobs for the B.C. shipyard industry and an increase of
$35 million a year in industry ourput.

The regulations grant port access to vessels that
co-operate with Canada on conservation issues. Up
until now that did not include the United States.

However, the Pacific Salmon Treaty, signed by the
USS. and Canada in june, means both countries will

now put

“conservation of the resource first,” said

Dhaliwal, “azid it ensures Canadian fishermen get a
fair shar: of commercial fisheries.”

Dhaliwal was introduced by Kyle Washington,
CEO of the Washington Marine Group, which owns
the North Shore-based Vancouver Shipyards.

Wearing a trenchcoat to shelter him from the rain,
Washington joked that Dhaliwai was going to “bring

a little sunshine” to the day.

- “Vessel repair work is-2 staple of our industry,”
said Washington. “This announcement allows us to
continue to grow and compete for international

work,”

Vancouver Shipyards CEO John Chard presented
a plaque to Dhaliwal in recognition of his work on the

new amendrnent.

“This is a major announcement for us,” said
Chard. “We've really suffered over the last two years
because of 3 decline in the work we've been able to do on American vessels. { believe this is very
positive for the industry. It can only be good for shipyards.”

North Vancouver City Mayor Barbara Sharp, said the announcement was “very exciting. The
shipyard is the heart of the city — it's the history of the city.”
