If you answered “organi- cally,” then the North Shore Recycling Program wants to hear from you. The NSRP is secking . Model organic gardens for a Fall 1999 Natural Gardens “Harvest Tour. Could your -garden be the first stop? With gardening being one “of the most popular hobbies iin North America, it’s no wonder everyone is talking about it. But you may have noticed that the talk of late is turning to some practices you may have never heard of: perma- culture, organic and water- wise gardening, integrated pest management, greywater systems, butterfly gerdens, and more. So what's it all about? More and move gardeners are beginning to understand the link between the health of our communities and the health of the land that sup- ports them. At a very base level, this inclades our own backyards. For the past few decades, conventional gardening prac- tices have actually fought against the natural tendencies of the land, but chat all seems to be changing now, as many people begin to embrace organic gardening, grasscy- cling, turf alrernatives, com- posting permaculture and other practices more in keep- ing with balance in our com- munities. The NSRP would like to promote these practices and spotlight gardeners on the North Shore who are doing things a little differently, who've moved beyond the The aN oundary Rc. Burnaby, BC conventional model and are taking the future in their hands. To that end, the NSRP is planning a Fall 1999 Natural Gardens Harvest = Tour. Should you or anyone you know be currently practising organic/alternative garden- ing and would like to be involved in the tour, the pro- gram would love to hear from you. When you call, you. will receive an entry form on which you can describe your garden and the practices that sustain it. Then, provided it fits @ Weeds of Canada and the Northern United States, by France Royer & Richard Dickinson, Lone Pine Publishing and University of Alberta Press, Edmonton, Alberta. $29.95. WHEN first asked to review Weeds of Canada, I was luke- warm to the idea. However, after looking at the book, J think ir will become a very useful and val- ued addition to my library. A fot of thought has gone into the planning of this book to make it user friendly. There is a quick reference for identifying weeds and grasscs as mature plants or as scedlings using clear pho- tographs. The plants are bro- ken down into natural divi- sions and cach page has a colour tab according to flower colour. You do not have to be a botanist to use the book. Each weed entry has a standard format that covers such topics as: quick ID, dis- tribution, common names, description, reason for con- cern and similar species. This information is accompanied by four to six excellent colour photographs showing all parts of the plant from seedling to flower. Many of our common weeds are close relatives to domesticated plants but lack their redeeming qualities and are prone to spread. Others are poisonous to humans and for tour within the alternative garden and yard care mandate, your garden could be included on the tour. It’s a great opportunity to pet the word out to your fei- jow gardeners, to allow them to sce exactly how thse activ- ities are put into pra€tice suc- cessfully. Deadline for entries is Aug. 20, 1999, so cali the NS2P at 984-9730 to receive your entry form. All qualifying North Shore gardeners who respond to this call will be entered into a draw for a Garden Gourmet backyard composter.
